The American Way of Eating
The rest of the world can say what they want about us, but one thing we aren't is lazy. The typical U.S. citizen works 40 hours a week or MORE. Moms are working; dads are working; kids are going to school and participating in extracurricular activities. Who has TIME to eat the way they should eat?
Fast food is FAST. The problem is that fast food is also FAT food. Yes, I know a Big Mac is delicious and a shake is just what you need on a hot summer day. But that Big Mac contains a meal's worth of calories in one sandwich. Who stops there? What about fries and a drink? By the time you are done eating one meal you have consumed a nearly a day's worth of calories. What about the other two meals?
When we aren't eating fast food, we are trying to make food fast. We buy packaged foods like pizza, breaded chicken, meals in a box... All we have to do is pop it in the oven and a few minutes later...Presto! We have a meal. An innutritious, fat and preservative-filled meal. Yum.
It isn't how much we eat. It is what we eat.
The Problem with Exercise
I'm not going to pretend Americans don't have time to exercise. Some honestly do have a difficult time fitting a workout into a busy day, but most people have an hour or two during which they could be at the gym or taking a walk. After working all day and eating at McDonalds, who has the energy?
Our children are playing video games, watching movies, or channel surfing. Often they are eating potato chips and downing sugar-filled soda while they do it, too.
We don't get enough exercise because we don't have the energy. We don't have the energy because of what we eat. We are encouraged by our culture to drive our car, watch our satellite, surf our internet... Why do we follow along so blindly? Because we don't have the energy to fight it.
